Albert Edward (Kuchershall) Jones, Age —
Private, 19530, 7th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Whilst searching through the names of Dawley Men who had died during the war I came across Albert. His original surname was Kuchershall, which he thought was too German sounding, so on the 20th June 1916 he changed it by deed poll to Jones.
He landed in France on the 5th October 1915 and joined the 5/K.S.L.I. but not long after he was wounded in mid-November 1915. I do not know if he returned to the 5th Battalion on recovery or went straight out to the 2nd Battalion in Salonika and is likely to be among the 2/K.S.L.I. men wounded between the 1st and 12th September 1916.
After this second wound, he was returned to UK as soon as possible because his wound was bad enough to get him discharged from the Armed forces on the 28th March 1917 and he was awarded a silver war badge on his discharge.
According to the Wellington & Shrewsbury Journal he never recovered from his wounds and died at home on the 14th January 1918 although no record of Albert is shown on either the Commonwealth war graves or Soldiers died in the Great War records even though they recorded War related deaths up to 1927 and 1921 respectively.
WWI Medal Rolls Index Card, Albert’s medal card showing both names.
